Dance Field Trip to Hofstra University
November 19, 2018
Ever wondered about what it’s like to dance in college? Recently, NHS Dance students had the visited Hofstra University to experience college dance firsthand. They took a modern dance class taught by a professional instructor from Hofstra, and had the opportunity to speak with college students about majoring in dance and balancing academic classes with dance.
The morning began with breakfast at the on-campus Dunkin’ Donuts, which the students really enjoyed. The class was about an hour, and students were taught warm-ups and dance sequences and encouraged to find a theme for their dance to be further inspired by the particular movements. The students were then brought to watch the college students and dance professionals show off snippets of their upcoming performances at Hofstra. They got to see a variety of dance styles, including modern, contemporary, jazz, and more. After the showcase, students got the chance to ask the dancers questions about their performances and their dance journey. Everyone was then taken into the cafeteria for a lunch break. More of the dancers came in for another question-and-answer session, this one a little more focused on college life, plans after the graduate, and how they balance a dance and non-dance major.
Overall, it was a fun and educational day for the students to get a feel for college life at Hofstra. Students were also able to learn about how the Hofstra dance program is definitely a more modern-based program. The students enjoyed learning about going to school at Hofstra and getting the chance to work with a professional instructor. It was a very inspiring day where the students learned a lot about how their love for dance could translate into a successful life at college.
