When Oscar Grant was fatally shot by police in 2009, college student Angie Thomas wrote a short story based on her reaction. Thomas later expanded the short story into a young adult novel titled The Hate U Give.
The Hate U Give tells the story of Starr, an African-American teen who witnesses the shooting by police of her childhood best friend. Throughout the novel, despite her distress, Starr aspires to find her voice and take a stand against injustice.
The Hate U Give is inspiring and encourages readers to stand up for what they believe in. Thomas conveys the message that no one is too young to make a difference. The novel educates readers on the ways in which they can stand up as they accompany Starr on her journey to memorialize her friend’s life.
The Hate U Give draws many parallels to current events and is perfect to read now.
In 2018, The Hate U Give was adapted for the screen by Audrey Wells.
You can find The Hate U Give on any platform where you read ebooks. The film adaptation of the The Hate U Give film is currently available on Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies & TV, Hulu, Vudu, YouTube.
