The Fight For Worst New York Football Team Begins
October 28, 2021
Let the Tankathon commence! Once again, to the surprise of no one, both our local NFL teams, the Jets and Giants, are bad again. Both have young quarterbacks, some notable stars, and barring a miracle, will not be in the postseason.
The question is: Which team will have the honor and distinction of finishing lower in the standings than the other?
As of this writing, both teams have lost five games, meaning they are on an even playing field. However, the Jets have already passed their bye week, so they are 1-5, while the Giants moved up to 2-5 after beating former Jet Sam Darnold and the Panthers. With Jets rookie quarterback Zach Wilson out for the next 2-4 weeks, the G-Men have an obvious advantage.
A new challenger, however, has entered the arena. Despite starting the season with playoff aspirations, the Miami Dolphins are currently a 1-6 team. They are in the AFC East, the same division as the Jets, meaning that they will play each other two more times this season. Fortunately for the Giants, they do have one match up versus Miami as well.
There are two other teams in the Giants’ division who are also 2-5, the Football Team and the Eagles. In two weeks, they face a Raiders team that just lost Head Coach Jon Gruden after a release of his unfortunate emails. Besides that, the Giants schedule is not great. Compared to the Jets….
With the surging Bengals, first place Bills, and the Colts due up over the next three weeks, you might be able to assume a loss in all three (unless backup quarterback Mike White becomes the Jets’ savior). But if Wilson comes back after three missed weeks thanks to his PCL strain and shows off the talent that had him picked second overall in this past draft, then the Jets could get exciting.
They then play the Dolphins, the one-win Texans, and the Eagles. Following that is the Saints, a good team but one the Giants already beat, followed by Dolphins again, another appalling team in the Jaguars, then two rough matchups to end the season. There could be a five win season here for the Jets.
Unfortunately, we will not get to see these two distinctly bad football teams play each other this season, although their weak division rivals will attempt to fight their battles for them. If there is one constant in life, it’s that the Jets will disappoint.
With the Giants having a win on them now, and an offense that can be dynamic (if they stop ruining it from the inside), they have to be the favorites for the prestigious title of best record in New York. The argument that the “Bills are the only team in New York” applies here, but that is no fun at all. No matter what, everyone wins. They will both enter the draft with a high pick of their own, plus another first rounder from someone else.
