The Controversy Surrounding Harry Styles’ New Brand, ‘Pleasing’
January 18, 2022
Singer-songwriter Harry Styles recently announced his new merchandise brand, called Pleasing. An eco-friendly, sustainable, beauty brand, the company’s motto is the following: “We’re Pleasing, Never Perfect.”
Currently on their website, they are selling nail polish, a lip serum, and eye serum, illuminating face serum, and crewnecks with the brand’s logo embossed on them. The entire brand is based in Los Angeles and dedicates itself to the notions of sustainability and reduction of the carbon footprint.
Every product listed on their website comes with a descriptive portfolio of the product’s details, sustainability, instructions, and ingredients.
The brand’s most popular item is their nail polish set called “The Perfect Polish Set,” priced at $65. The set is biodegradable, vegan, cruelty-free and uses only plant-based ingredients. Harry is known to have his nails painted frequently; this fact is perhaps why the nail polish is such a popular item within the repertoire of Pleasing.
Another incredibly popular item from Pleasing was their “Pleasing Crewneck” of which I mentioned previously. The crewneck is priced at $95 and goes from sizes Extra Small to 3XL. As well, the crewneck comes in a variety of colors (many of which I find absolutely stunning) including creme and black. Like many of the brand’s other products, the “Pleasing Crewneck” is ethically crafted, made in Los Angeles, and uses 100% cotton (50% of which is recycled, 50% of which is organic).
Despite all this, however, Pleasing has come under fire for what some believe to be the brand’s overzealous mark-up and abnormally high prices.
Brand Controversy
The merchandise that Harry Styles has released in the past have not been ethically produced either, and have decently high prices, but Pleasing is different.
Although yes, Pleasing’s price margin is not exactly inexpensive, critics often forget that the brand is ethically made, gives back to the environment, and unlike fast-fashion brands worldwide, provides living wages for the people who manufacture their products.
The price tag may be a little high, but Pleasing is worth its price for the positive change that the brand is creating. Additionally, critics are bashing the company’s size range. Particularly, the Pleasing crewneck is receiving a lot of heat. The product only goes up to a size 3XL, not size 5XL, though it is often looked past that Styles’ original merchandise line only goes up to a size 2XL.
Reviews
I asked a few recent Pleasing customers their thoughts on the products that they had received. For The Pleasing Pen, I learned that it “is super light on your skin,” and that “the lip side feels nice on your lips but it makes your lips dry.” Another customer stated that the face serum “was super moisturizing and light on the skin.”
Buy or Bye?
Overall, I think that Pleasing is a brand that is worth spending the money on. Although on the pricier end, the brand has high ethical standards in both the materials that they use and the staff they work with, and product reviews have overall been positive.
