Mets Manager Named Manager Of The Year
November 28, 2022
New York Mets manager Buck Showalter has won his 4th Manager of the Year Award. Here is everything you need to know.
The last manager to lead the Mets to the playoffs was Terry Collins, who was manager from 2011-2017. He also led them during the 2015 World Series, but fell just short against the Kansas City Royals.
After his retirement as manager, the team seemed to have gone downhill. Following Collins was Mickey Callaway, until 2019 when he was fired. During the 2020 and 2021 seasons, the New York Mets manager was Luis Rojas. That was until last offseason, when the team declined his contract for this past season. Rojas is now the 3rd base coach for the New York Yankees.
After owner Steve Cohen’s first year, he decided to bring in Buck Showalter. “Buck has been one of the best baseball minds for the last two decades and he makes teams better,” Cohen said. Although the Mets had an early first-round exit, Showalter did a lot of incredible things for not only himself but the club. Out of all 21 seasons that he has managed, this season’s number of wins at 101 was his most and the Mets second most, just under the 1986 record of 108.
However, Showalter remains to have the second-highest number of wins (1,652) in MLB history without winning a World Series title. He is only behind Gene Mauch at 1,902 wins. Showalter is 19th on the all-time MLB wins list.
Shortly after his amazing but unrewarding season, he won NL Manager of the Year. He has now become just the third person to win in four different decades, and to win each one with a different franchise. Not to mention, he is the first manager of the Mets to win this award. The only other manager to bring both the Mets and Yankees to the playoffs along with Showalter is Yogi Berra.
Now that Buck Showalter has won the Manager of the Year Award, that leaves only the Milwaukee Brewers as the only MLB franchise that has yet to have one of their managers win the title. But the New York Mets are still one of three teams that are yet to have an MVP winner, along with the Tampa Bay Rays, and Showalter’s old Arizona Diamondbacks.
Showalter received 8 of the 30 first-place votes, and 10 second-place votes, all for a total of 77 points, beating out the LA Dodgers manager Dave Roberts who finished as runner-up.
Will Buck Showalter finally get his ring in the 2023 season?
