At the beginning of the school year, students were introduced to phone holders. Phone holders are pockets where you put your phone in and it stays there for the remainder of the period.
Although this is a mandatory, school-wide policy, a lot of students have purposely hidden their phones in their pockets or book bags to avoid putting them in the holders. This can be infuriating for many teachers who have had to find new techniques to attempt to get students to follow this new rule.
The reason why these phone holders were put in Northport High School in the first place is because a lot of students in recent years have been secretly using their phones during class or sneaking them to the bathroom.
I was curious to hear what the other students thought about these phone holders, so I decided to conduct a few interviews around the school. First, I interviewed Sophia Angelo, a freshman at Northport High School.
When asked about what she thought about the phone holders at school, Angelo said, “It’s good for the kids who [having their phones] will be a distraction but at the same time it is annoying. I personally don’t like them because somebody banged into mine too hard and cracked my screen.”
To get a different perspective, I asked senior Heidi Alvarez what her opinion was on the new school policy. She said that personally, she thought that it would be better if we didn’t “…have them [because] they’re treating us as if we were kids.”
Based on these interviews and general feelings across the school, I’ve discovered that the majority of the school does not like these phone holders and thinks it’s unfair to have them. But, if students want the school to take away the phone holders, the students must take responsibility for their actions and not use their phones in class, which would be difficult for many.
