When a student starts middle school, they usually think that it’s very easy. When high school rolls around, people start to worry. The high school is much bigger than the middle school and the classes are also a lot more difficult, which can make some students nervous. But don’t worry – many people will help you along the way!
To fully understand what it feels like to move from middle to high school, you have to start at the middle school level and understand what it was like there. Many kids are pretty excited for middle school, as it’s a fun, new experience. It’s still a big change though, as it’s the first time you get to change classes during the school day and have more than one teacher.
Although now the middle schools start with 5th grade, when I went there it started in 6th grade so I’m going to start with that. Most people enjoyed 6th grade as it was an easy introduction to what middle school was going to be like. You basically stayed with the same people all day (except for changing teachers) as the school wanted it to be as easy as possible to find your classes.
The 7th grade is somewhat harder than the 6th. Some people thought it was really hard because of the more constant assignments and homework for most of the weeks of school. Some people thought it was pretty easy because they were able to finish their assignments before they were even sent back home.
The 8th grade is one of the hardest in middle school. There are more assignments and homework (even on the weekends!). The one thing that makes eighth grade interesting is the regents exams. For eighth grade only, there will be a regents exam for either math, living environment, or earth science. A back story about regents is that they are tests given by the state that allow you to graduate high school. Even though we were only middle schoolers, we were learning at a high school level and were therefore required to take regents exams.
Now, we’re in high school and everybody is worried all of the time. But is high school really that much harder than middle school? The answer to that question can be both yes and no.
The reason is that as a freshman, you will have a lot thrown on you, like more expectations from your teachers. The easiest part about high school is the more freedom you have in the school. Many new electives are way more interesting and you’re now able to choose your classes. The high school expects you to always stay on track.
Overall, the transition from middle school to high school can be daunting for some, but it gets easier as the year progresses. Although it can be stressful, many people will help you along the way.
