For all of the Yankee fans out there, you may have heard that Juan Soto may be traded, and the Yankees are interested. However, it could cost them top prospect Jasson Dominguez. Although Dominguez has played very well, hitting 4 home runs in his first couple of games, he has only played eight full MLB games. As well, he got injured during one of his first games as he threw the ball all the way from center field, tearing a ligament in his right elbow, causing him to get Tommy John surgery, a common surgery for MLB players. This will sideline Dominguez for roughly half of the 2024 season. Because of all these factors, the Yankees could be planning to trade him for Soto, a star on the San Diego Padres.
Soto is a stud player, with 35 home runs this season. He also had 109 RBI’s and 97 runs scored. Throughout his career, his stats have been very good and consistent. These stats make him stand out and every team would like to have him on their squad. But the real reason the Padres cannot not hold onto Soto is because of money.
The rumor is that Soto has previously rejected a contract extension worth $440 million over a 15 year contract. To avoid arbitration, Soto earned $23 million in 2023, a number that will only go up in his final year under team control. As a small market team, the Padres likely will not be able to afford to sign him to even more than that rumored offer. One year away from free agency, Soto’s name is on the trade market. The odds are that the Yankees will be right there to try and scoop him up.
