It’s an event we have all dreamed of, something as elusive as Big Foot or the Loch Ness monster, where the only proof we have is word of mouth. Some will say that it’s never happened before, while others claim this extra day has occurred in the past but are unable to place a year as to when. The mysterious day off before Thanksgiving has finally been gifted to us after many, many years without it.
So why are we getting one now? One theory is that it’s the now-retired superintendent, Mr. Banzer, who had one last “hoorah” before retirement. Another suggestion is that the Jewish holidays all landed on weekends, giving us an extra day before Thanksgiving.
Maybe, it could be that a lot of other districts in the surrounding area have always had the day off and we’ve finally decided to hop on that bandwagon. No one knows for sure as to why, but we do know that this decision was not controversial in the least.
Just to be sure though, I did ask others as to their thoughts on this extra day off. When I asked Dora, a student at Northport High School what she thought, she responded, “I’m excited because I’m going to get to prepare for Thanksgiving the day before, giving me more time to spend with my family the day of.”
Next, I asked my parents how they felt, to which they replied that it made no difference to them because they still had to work. I didn’t get to ask any teachers how they felt about the extra day but I’m guessing that the consensus is that most students and teachers are happy about it.
Overall this year’s Thanksgiving break will be one to remember due to having Wednesday off for the first time in forever, and just like Dora said, it’ll also give us all more time to spend with our loved ones. I hope you all have a happy and healthy Thanksgiving break!
