Coming out of Week 6, the Denver Broncos believed their season was over. They had fallen to the Chiefs, making their record 1-5. Little did they know, they had a lot more to show their fans. Right now the Broncos stand at a 6-5 record, holding the number seven seed in the AFC, which is the last wildcard spot. People are wondering how this came to happen.
Russell Wilson was officially traded to the Denver Broncos on March 16th 2022. They acquired him from the Seattle Seahawks in a shocking turn of events for the Broncos. Wilson was believed to be the quarterback who would lead them back to the playoffs. This did not happen as they finished with a 5-12 record, which was dead last in the AFC West. Wilson could not connect with his receivers the way he could in Seattle in every game. This led the Broncos to think Wilson isn’t the same guy he had been in Seattle.
The offseason for the Broncos this year didn’t have any huge player changes, but the coaching changes looked more promising then what Russell Wilson brought to the table. They decided to fire former head coach Nathaniel Hackett and go and hire one of the best guys available to coach, Sean Payton. Payton came over from New Orleans to hopefully teach Wilson how to become the quarterback he once was. This was quickly seen as a great fit for the Broncos, seeing that Payton coached one of the best quarterbacks of all time, Drew Brees. This combination hints at a promising season, or so they thought.
The Broncos started off dropping their first 3 games to the Raiders, Commanders and then an embarrassing loss to the Dolphins where the Denver defense gave up 70 points to an explosive offense. They then faced off against a fellow 0-3 team in the Bears, then won to advance to 1-3, hoping they could jump start their season. That was until Hackett and the Jets came to Denver and shut them down in a 31-21 loss. They then went to Kansas City, and lost to the Chiefs. The Broncos might have thought their season was over here. But, they then beat the Packers, then the Chiefs which snapped a 16 game losing streak to Kansas City, which dated back to 2015. They then went to Buffalo, and against all odds took down the Bills, potentially thanks to a lucky last minute penalty on Buffalo. They then hosted the Vikings and the Browns, both of whom they were able to beat. Now, with a five game winning streak, they put their record to 6-5 giving them a chance to prove that they still can win some games.
The Broncos are getting ready to suit up and play the Texans in a game of two 6-5 teams. Denver looks to win their 6th straight game, and get themselves back to a place where they are a real competitive team.
