If you’ve ever wanted to have a group of people to talk about truths of the universe with, look no further than Northport High School’s Philosophy Club. Student-organized and founded, Philosophy Club is a place where students can have discussions pertaining to philosophy. They can also explore the topic as an option to study beyond the classroom, even after graduation.
With interest among students in all grades climbing, word is getting out about the club. “I heard about it last year,” one student says, “And the first meeting had 18 members, which is enough to make it a class at the school.”
There are a wide range of students in the club, from sporty sophomores to STEM club seniors, all coming together with a common interest in philosophy. With the continued positive student feedback and the major influx of new members every meeting, the club could easily be instated as a course at NHS, which would be a huge accomplishment for both the members and the founders.
Every meeting centers on a topic chosen by the members of the club, which is then discussed and debated from different perspectives. The discussion is prompted by English teacher Mrs. Scanlon, but led by the students and officers.
Founder and president Nathan Zarko says this about the club: “The unofficial philosophy club is a club that meets irregularly before school in L129, to discuss the great philosophical questions that have plagued humanity. Some topics that have been discussed so far are free will and the mind-body relationship.”
So if you’re looking for intellectual conversations, new perspectives on the world around you, or just a fun and interesting way to explore different fields of study, Philosophy Club is the way to find it.
