We all know the super-famous pop star Taylor Swift. Surely you’ve heard hits such as “You Belong with Me” or “Shake it Off” before, or maybe you’ve seen people reposting her newest songs on their Instagram stories or posting pictures from their experience at The Eras Tour. Either way, there’s no possible explanation as to how or why you’ve never heard the name Taylor Swift.
But here’s the big question- why is she so popular? How did she rise to fame?
Taylor Swift is one of the most well-known artists of this generation. People of all ages seem to know and enjoy her music. But what makes her so likable?
Her main audience is teenagers, specifically teenage girls. As a teenage girl myself, we feel that we can relate to her songs. Lots of my friends and I feel seen when listening to the lyrics. We also find her to have a warm personality and a kind heart.
Even people who don’t necessarily like her music say that they can’t deny that she has an amazing talent. Most people find her songwriting skills to be unlike any other artist and her voice to be very unique and clear. She also has an effect on those who wouldn’t normally listen to their music. Many people who listen to punk, rap, rock, or alternative music admit that they listen to Taylor Swift.
Her recent tour, “The Eras Tour”, is also another example of her fame. Records broke as she became the artist with the most tickets sold for a tour. She has the biggest fanbase of any artist, having more fans than Beyoncé’s Beyhive and Justin Beiber’s Beliebers. She broke Elton John’s record for the most tickets sold for a solo artist’s tour, coming in at a whopping $1.4 billion in ticket sales.
Swift is undoubtedly remarkable. She started off her music career when she was only 14 years old. She rose to fame in 2006 when she became the first-ever solo female artist to write every song on a country album on her own. Her first-ever hit, “Tim McGraw,” stayed on the Billboard Top 100 for 20 weeks and placed at #40 on the charts that year. It also ranked at #6 on the Hot Country Songs chart.
However, Swift didn’t reach the #1 place on the Billboard Top 100 until the release of her song, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” in 2012, 6 years after “Tim McGraw.”
Another thing that I love is the catchiness of her songs. I’m sure you’ve definitely found yourself singing or humming a Taylor Swift song before, even if you HATE her music!
She is also an influence and icon to young teen girls today. Many girls aspire to be like Taylor Swift, whether it’s wanting to become a singer/songwriter, or just to have the kind soul and heart she has.
