Just over one week ago, the 81st Golden Globe Awards ceremony for 2023 was held. The Golden Globe Awards are awards given to international film creators and actors for the best films of the year.
While it may seem like a distant event for many high school students, the world of cinema offers something for everyone. Many popular films won awards, but also many films you may not have heard of won as well! Let’s take a look at some of the standings and winners for 2023’s most successful and popular films.
Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Film- Emma Stone
Actress and film producer Emma Stone, well known for her roles in La La Land and Cruella, won the award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Film for her performance in the new film Poor Things.
Best Actor in a Drama Film- Cillian Murphy
Irish actor Cillian Murphy won this award for his killer performance in one of the most successful movies of 2023, Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer is a film about the Manhattan Project, a project where the United States created nuclear bombs to use in World War II in their rivalry against Japan.
Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television- Ricky Gervais
English comedian Ricky Gervais is one of the most famous, well-known comedians out there. You may know him from movies such as Muppets: Most Wanted and the Night at the Museum franchise.
Best Original Song in a Film- Billie Eilish’s What Was I Made For?
Famous singer-songwriter Billie Eilish broke the internet with her original song, What Was I Made For? from the record-breaking film of 2023, Barbie. The song’s music video alone has over 95 million views and got over 30 million streams across all music platforms in just the first 10 days of the film’s soundtrack being released.
Best Director of a Motion Picture- Christopher Nolan
Christopher Nolan won the award for best director after his film Oppenheimer took off. Oppenheimer made four times the 100 million USD spent on the making of the film, coming in at a whopping $400 million at the box office.
Film with the Highest Cinematic and Box Office Achievement- Barbie
Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, was the highest-grossing and most successful movie of 2023. In fact, after the movie was released there was a global shortage of pink paint and Barbie doll sales went up by 16% all across the world. The runner-ups for this category were Oppenheimer, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, John Wick: Chapter 4, and Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.
