Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus was deemed one of the New York Times Most Notable Books of 2022 with tons of raving reviews. But is it really that good of a book?
Lessons in Chemistry shows the journey of a not-so-average woman in the early 1960s. Elizabeth Zott, a brilliant chemist, has to go through her day-to-day life dealing with the very unscientific view of equality from her all-male team at Hastings Research. Throughout the years, Zott finds herself a single mom and a star of America’s most beloved show, Supper at Six, where Elizabeth not only teaches women to cook healthy delicious meals but is also daring them to challenge the status quo.
You may all be wondering, does this book stand up to its reviews? The answer is yes! While I was reading this book I just could not put it down. As you continue to read you fall in love with each character, except obviously the misogynistic employees of Hastings.
But even with the most hated characters you can feel Zott’s frustration and anger over what she has to go through; feeling everything she does as time goes on from her ups and downs. It has you wishing that Elizabeth Zott was a real person, as she’s an example of a person everyone should be. Zott is an icon who does not compromise or waver in what she knows she wants and deserves.
This book is enjoyable for everyone. It contains comedy, romance, accurate science, and a lesson that every person needs to learn. I know most guys who are reading this review are thinking, “Bleh, no way I would like something so clearly meant for girls.” But even guys could love such a book. Stephen Hawking even reviewed this book, calling it “Witty, sometimes hilarious…” on Twitter.
There is nothing to dislike about this book. It isn’t just through Zott’s point of view either, you get to see it from the perspective of every person you meet along the way. Understanding their emotions and thoughts. It even includes the perspective of a dog (you have to be curious about that).
Lessons In Chemistry wraps up so perfectly it makes you feel sad to have finished. Yet it inspires you to take action and to persevere at your lowest points. A truly important book that will become an inspiration to all those who will never give up on their dreams.
I RATE THIS BOOK A:
