Northport High School just finished producing this year’s school musical, The Prom. The showings were on Friday, March 1st – and Sunday, March 3rd.
This was the first ever musical I have ever watched. As an individual with zero theater experience, the musical was a fun new experience for me and I enjoyed it.
Overall, the production of this musical was amazing. The cast collaborated in a way that looked authentic and enthusiastic. The singing and dancing were all well thought out and made for a really enjoyable show. The variety of dances was so good I thought it looked like Broadway. I could see the hours of rehearsal put into the show in their perfectly synced dances and well-memorized lines. The closing scene where the cast performed “It’s Time to Dance” was a specific song where dancing, props, and the singers’ amazing talents shone through to create a phenomenal scene for the audience.
All the individuals performing on stage executed their roles to a large degree of success as they caught the attention of the viewers and kept most on the edge of their seats. Jacob Karp as Trent, Makayla Connolly as Dee Dee, Francis Dentrone as Barry, and Emma Fierro as Angie all lived up to their roles as Broadway stars with talented vocals and amazing dance moves. This paired well with heartfelt acting and singing from Alexandra Curatolo as Emma and Lacey Zaharis as Alyssa.
In addition to the cast, the stage crew did an outstanding job creating beautiful sets. My favorite piece was the bedroom they created. It seemed very realistic and accurate with a small bed, vines, and several photos and posters which added unique features to personalize her room.
Also, the play’s lighting enhanced the actors’ emotions and dramatic effect. A variety of different colored lighting was used throughout to change the mood of the song or sense within the play. Specifically, during the song “Zazz” song, the lights turned red and multicolored to show the fun and bright nature of Broadway.
Finally, the music the pit played added another dramatic feature to this play. The pit played loud, intense music that added a whole new layer of intensity to songs.
All components of this musical were carried out beautifully and created an astonishing production for the community. The hard work put in by Northport High School students was worth it.
This was an experience to remember for my first musical!
