As the sun starts to set later and flowers begin to bloom, spring sports draw closer for Northport High School! An exciting season for athletes, coaches, and spectators, spring sports are a vital part of Northport High School culture. Northport Physical Education/Athletics department even states, “It is the mission of our Physical Education Program to demonstrate a commitment to the comprehensive education and development of each student as an individual and as a member of the school community.”
For our spring season starting up on Monday, March 11th, Northport High School offers a variety of sports for all students including Baseball, Softball, Flag Football, Track and Field (girls + boys), Lacrosse (girls + boys), Boys Tennis, and Girls Golf. Each of these sports is different in nature, rules, and skill level however, let’s take a look at what some spring athletes have to say about their sports and the surprising similarities that connect them.
Vito La Rosa: Track and Field
Vito LaRosa is a senior athlete here at Northport High School. He is a longtime baseball player and is currently committed to play baseball next year at Manhattan College. Over this past Winter Track and Field season, Vito LaRosa officially broke his own school record for the 55-meter dash “10-11 times” he estimates.
After having a fantastic Winter Track and Field season, Vito says he couldn’t slow the momentum down, and even though he normally plays baseball during the spring, he was “just too on fire”. The Boys Spring Track Team is excited to welcome him into the spring season since this will be his first ever outdoor track season and hopes that Vito can continue his record-crushing streak out on the track.
In addition, now that Vito is a spring track athlete, his coaches at Manhattan College have agreed and confirmed that he will now be a double D1 athlete, committing to participate in both the D1 Baseball and D1 Track teams! Vito is excited to be outside running track in what hopefully will be beautiful weather, and for those who like Vito also struggle to pick between sports, he says “If you’re stuck between two seasons, go with your heart”.
Jaime Gould: Softball
Jaime Gould is a Junior at Northport High School and a proud member of the Varsity Softball team. She is excited to start this spring season and is confident in this year’s team. Softball is her favorite sport, and she can’t wait to start off her Junior season here at Northport High School.
Her overall goal for the season is for the team to make it far into the playoffs, which she thinks is definitely achievable for such a strong team. To anyone thinking about joining a team this spring, she highly recommends softball!
Aidan Catanzaro: Tennis
Aidan Catanzaro is a senior at Northport High School. He has also been a Northport tennis player for the past six years. Coming into his fourth and final spring tennis season, Aidan is feeling excited and happy to be back out on the courts. His goal this season is to keep team morale high, and make sure they celebrate the wins but also don’t take the losses too hard, a vital aspect of every sport.
Having played tennis since 7th grade, Aidan says that one of his favorite parts of the sport is making close friends over the years that he might not have met if he hadn’t decided to pick up the racket!
Aidan plans to continue playing tennis wherever he ends up after high school and is sure to make many more friendships along the way. He encourages anyone unsure about coming out for a spring sport this season to give a sport that interests them a chance and try to
