As many of you know, snow has been very scarce for Long Island this year and last year. But how much did we really get and how much did the Northeast get?
Some people love snow, like me. And some people despise snow. This year, Long Island got around 16 inches of snow. Our biggest snowstorm was 9 inches of snow on Tuesday, February 13th, 2024. This was our biggest snowstorm in two years!
But up North in Buffalo New York, it was much different than down here. On average, Buffalo gets over 90 inches of snow per year! This is due to something called the lake effect.
Buffalo sits right next to one of the great lakes called Lake Erie. The lake effect is when the air is hotter over the lake and the wind moves the hotter air towards the colder land and it creates a weather system. This creates massive snowstorms that go on for days. One snowstorm made the football team the Buffalo Bills postpone a game due to the 3 feet of snow in the stadium!
Now we move down to the Catskills, which is a small mountain range part of the Appalachian mountains. This part of New York has the most ski resorts in the state. This area of New York has not been doing so well in the past couple of years. They get an average of 50 inches per year, but they have been declining over the years.
Now we move to Northern New York towards Canada. This area of New York gets the most amount of snow on average. Some places get more than 100 plus inches of snow per year. Wish I could be up there! Gore, a New York State-owned ski mountain, got two feet of snow from the rain storm we had. And they still might get more snow.
Now, time for the place in New York that gets the most snow: Old Forge, New York. This town in Northern New York gets 170 inches per year on average. Thats crazy!
