James Simonetti has been the first boy in Northport history to make the Flagline team, and things haven’t always been easy for him. However, through trial and error, James has found something he is seriously passionate about and made NHS history in the process.
I interviewed James to ask how he accomplished his goals, overcame his struggles, and made the team. But first I would like to thank the Northport Flagline team for being such an amazing part of the school and allowing James to do what he loves. I’m sure anyone would agree that the flag team has put on some amazing commons shows.
First, James admits that he faced challenges the first time he tried out for flagline. He recalls, “It was hard for me because I was the only boy and there were only girls trying out for the team.” James, believe it or not, was rejected by the team last year. How did he improve? “I just got my flag and I practiced and practiced.” Some people may have seen him in last year’s NMS variety show.
James says his teammates, friends, and family cheered him on to try again. Some specific people are to thank including Lacey Zaharis and Paola Centeno.
James Simonetti told me some advice he would give to someone afraid of trying something new. “Try your best.. If you don’t get in, do it again next year, and the next year, and the next year.” So with that advice, I wish James and the rest of the flag team a great 2024-2025 season.
