Project Nemesis is a bestselling series by Brendan Neich. This series is a post-apocalyptic science fiction novel told by two narrators; Min and Noah. Since they were 8 years old, every other birthday they are brutally murdered on their birthday and come back alive the next day as if nothing had ever happened. As the story progresses it takes twists and turns you never would have guessed.
WARNING: SPOILERS (and definitely rants)
This story goes pretty crazy. I mean, I was interested in the whole murder thing in the first book. But they literally end up in a simulation at some point and basically the whole of the 2nd book as well. A SIMULATION. It sounds worse than it actually was. This book has layers and is more thought out than you would think.
Apparently these certain people were chosen to be put in a simulation since the world had ended. The whole murder every other birthday thing was because they were testing it out on a certain few.
The craziest part, though, is that the guy that murders Min and Noah every even-numbered birthday was Min’s father. Just great parenting – show up to kill your daughter here and there. Now, throughout this book there is a whole romance factor, la de da, the lowly boy best friend of Min who likes her and it is unreciprocated since she likes Noah and he likes her.
Eventually, they are even brought back to ANOTHER simulation with other kids and Min is this epic leader who really knows how to gather people. SO, when the end finally happens, I just can’t get over it. I will never get over it.
The rest of it was fantastic. It had me at the edge of my seat with twists and turns I didn’t see coming. One of which is that Noah dies. Now I really don’t care that he dies. BUT what annoys me is that Min is so sad from this that she lives a lonely life on a farm isolated from everyone else. Are you kidding me? This totally ruined Min for me. She developed into this great leader of the group and just because Noah died, she gave it all up? Like come on… he wasn’t that special. It really ruined the whole book series for me.
Despite that horrible ending, the whole ride until then, though absolutely wild, was very enjoyable. I recommend this book series if you are looking for more sci-fi books.
