When searching for a job this summer, you may find that many businesses require a resume when applying. Whether the role is in childcare, retail, or restaurants, many employers want to see a student’s experience before hiring them. Listed below are some resume tips to help make your application stand out when applying for employment positions!
Style
Your resume should be professional in style. Consider using standard fonts such as Times New Roman and Arial rather than more informal styles such as Comic Sans. Make sure that you use appropriate language throughout the document; a resume should not include phrases such as “LOL” and “LMK”.
Length
The resume should not be longer than one page. In fact, one article has shown that 70% of resumes get rejected during the first stage. With a shocking statistic such as this, it is important that the one-page rule is followed so that you do not get automatically rejected. If you find that you have too many accomplishments to show on just one page, you may have to consider making your font smaller to fit all your experiences! You also may need to take out some details to make your resume as concise as possible.
What to Include
The document should be a highlight of your previous experiences such as clubs, sports, leadership positions, volunteer work, and previous employment; and should be organized into distinct sections. For each experience that you list, include 2-4 bullets explaining the work that you participated in during your time in the role. When doing this, make sure to also show any accomplishments that you had while participating. This can include helping your team make it to the playoffs, or raising a record amount of money during a fundraiser! If you can, try and quantify your accomplishments to show the impact you made. Included below is a copy of what a listed experience should look like:
