Lockers seem so useful on the surface; what could be better than having a lighter backpack? So what happened? Why are most of the lockers at NHS falling into disuse?
Ask anyone and they’ll tell you that they don’t use their assigned locker. I think a big reason why would be the locks. I personally have a lot of trouble with these rotating locks of antiquity. First, you have to turn it right 48 times, then left 17 times, and then do the hokey-pokey. Its just annoying.
I think they’re much more cumbersome than a lock with a three digit combination. I think that being able to see numbers more clearly with a more modern design would let students more easily open their lockers. In my opinion, new locks would be a good investment as it would allow students to utilize a pre-existing resource more frequently and efficiently.
Creating a schedule where you can find time to get your books is also key. For example, if you’re near your locker during 6th period, switch out the books from your morning classes. This would be a good idea for students who don’t have a lunch nor a free period. If you do, just use your locker during lunch or study hall.
Last, lockers add yet another stress on teens. It’s another thing to keep clean and you have to make sure you don’t forget anything. However overall, I think lockers allow for a lot of customization and self expression.
To spice things up, maybe buy a locker wallpaper and an organizer. Find out if you have any friends who have nearby lockers. I think that lockers can be more beneficial with a few changes to how they are utilized.
