Something I have always enjoyed about Northport is how much the town promotes the arts. This can be seen through the art and music festival, the extensive music and theater programs in the school district, the various art galleries in the village, and most recently, the Poetry Path. The Poetry Path, located in Northport village, shows off the work of 12 Long Island poets with accompanying artwork.
This weekend, I took a walk down to the park to go through the poetry path myself. The path winds from the walkway closest to the water, behind the gazebo, and around to the brick steps leading up onto the sidewalk, making for a very nice stroll under a shaded path. The poems themselves are about all sorts of topics, not keeping to a particular theme, although there were quite a few that were specifically about the town of Northport itself.
My favorite was “I Cannot Live Without Magic” by Diana Paulos-Lutz. Reading it served as a good reminder to always look for the beauty in everyday life. I implore all of you to read it yourselves. As a whole, I saw the poetry path as more than just something new to check out in the park, but as a way to further foster the arts, and make them enjoyable to the general public, specifically children who have just begun their journey in the world of literature.
On a nice day, I urge you all to take a walk in the park, read all of these amazing poems, and remember just how great is to live in a town where art is cherished.
