I’m sure everyone has heard of senioritis, a rampant phenomenon that causes seniors to stop caring about grades and skip class. If there’s any time to do so, it would be senior year. If your high school career is just winding down and you know where you’re going to school, 2 AM study sessions just don’t feel worth it.
However, yesterday I heard a new term: freshmanitis. Now, I understand being tired of school. If you know me you know there’s about a 50% chance I considered taking a sick day every day. However, I feel like freshmanitis isn’t a unique phenomenon as much as it is just a new word for a ubiquitous feeling. There’s now freshmanitis, sophomoritis, and junioritis.
Being sick of school is normal. Counting down those last few days is excruciating. But terms like freshmanitis are just kinda silly. I feel like we come up with these words to give ourselves a little extra grace.
Instead of using made-up words to make our exhaustion seem “justified”, maybe we can all be a bit more understanding to each other and ourselves. Normalize being tired! You don’t have freshmanitis, you just need to take more breaks and make time to do what you enjoy. Hopefully, the time will pass a little quicker!
