Week two of the NFL season comes to a thrilling end. Hi, we’re Gavin Schmidt and Andrew Beitchman and we write about the NFL. Week two had many upsets and blowouts, here is a rundown of the top ten games that happened in week two.
At number 10, The New York Jets played the Tennessee Titans, a thrilling back-and-forth game. The Titans scored first with a 10-yard run from wide receiver Calvin Ridley. The Jets scored a touchdown with rookie, Braelon Allen. The Titans took a 10-7 lead at the half. The Jets ended up winning 24-17. Aaron Rodgers, the Jets quarterback, threw for 176 yards and 2 TDs. Will Levis, the Titans quarterback, threw for 192 yards, 1 TD, and 1 interception. Final score, 24-17
At number 9, we have the Seattle Seahawks against the New England Patriots. The Patriots were coming off a huge win against the Bengals, but the Seahawks were trying to stay undefeated and so were the Patriots. The rookie wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk had his first touchdown in his NFL career. D.K. Metcalf then scored for the Seahawks and tied up the game. The lead went back and forth between these two teams. The Seahawks blocked a field goal to give them a chance. They went down the field and tied the game with a 38-yard field goal by Jason Myers. In overtime, the Seahawks marched down the field and scored the game-winning field goal. Final score, 23-20
At number 8 is an NFC Divisional game rematch. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers faced off against the Detroit Lions looking for their revenge. Bucs Quarterback Baker Mayfield was 12/19 passing for 185 yards and a touchdown. Although he threw for an interception it didn’t matter as he lifted them to victory over the Lions 20-16. Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin caught 7 passes and went for 117 yards and a touchdown. Although Jared Goff, Lions quarterback, threw for 307 yards, his 2 interceptions were the reason for the loss they suffered. Final score, 20-16
At number 7, we have an AFC matchup on Thursday Night Football. The Buffalo Bills are facing the Miami Dolphins. James Cook struck first with a touchdown to put the Bills ahead. The Dolphins march down the field and tie up the game, but this would be the end of the Dolphins game. Their defense could not hold up the Bills offense. Tua Tagovailoa continued to throw 3 interceptions, one of those was a pick-six. What happened next, Dolphin fans know too well. Tua got a concussion, he has been placed on IR and might not return for a few weeks. However, Josh Allen, Bill’s quarterback, threw for 139 yards and a touchdown. James Cook had 78 rushing yards and three total touchdowns. He got more touchdowns that game than the entirety of last season. Final score, 31-10
Coming in at number 6 we have the Minnesota Vikings vs the San Francisco 49ers. Brock Purdy, quarterback for the 49ers, passed for 319 yards and a touchdown, while Jordan Mason, their running back rushed for 100 yards. Although they put out a stellar performance, Vikings superstar receiver Justin Jefferson got a 97-yard touchdown and finished with 133 yards on the day and lifted the Vikings to a win, 23-17.
At number 5 we have the Philadelphia Eagles facing the Atlanta Falcons. This is the Eagles home opener after defeating the Green Bay Packers in Brazil. The Eagles were favored to win by a large margin. The first half started slow with only one touchdown by the Eagles and two field goals by the Falcons. Although, during the second half, more points were put on the board. 5 different lead changes happened in the second half. A field goal with 1:49 minutes left in the game. They had a 21-15 point lead. Kirk Cousins the Falcons quarterback, makes a big drive to the endzone when Drake London the Falcon’s number one wide receiver catches the touchdown. Jalen Hurts and the Eagle’s offense got one last chance to score and win, but he threw an interception and the Eagles lost 22-21.
At number 4 we have the Las Vegas Raiders playing the Baltimore Ravens. This game was what most people would call unrealistic. The Ravens and Raiders were both 0-1. The Ravens were projected the win that game by a lot. They were playing at home and they had the best record in the AFC and the NFL, and the Raiders had a losing season last year. So the Ravens should have won this game. However, the Raiders’ defense ended Lamar Jackson and the Ravens’ offense, ensuring they didn’t score any points. The first quarter of the game was all field goals, so each defense was coming up clutch. Baltimore had the lead in the half. Baltimore had a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter but the Ravens defense couldn’t stop the Raiders. They scored 13 points with 10 minutes left to win the game. Final score, 26-23.
At number 3 we have a divisional matchup on the West Coast with the Arizona Cardinals vs the Los Angeles Rams. Coming in, analysts predicted a blowout performance from the Rams. Unfortunately for them, they experienced quite the opposite. The Cardinals crushed the Rams 41-10. This was a statement game for the team. The number four overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft Marvin Harrison Jr. hit the ground running. He caught 4 balls for 130 yards and 2 long touchdowns. His performance alone could have lifted this team to a win, but the Quarterback play from the Cardinals was great too. Kyler Murray passed for 266 yards and 3 big touchdowns. He also ran for 59 yards. James Conner, the runningback for the Cardinals rushed for big yardage, 122, and a touchdown to top off a great performance from this team. The Rams also took a big hit as star wide receiver Cooper Kupp left the game with an injury and is doubtful to play in his next competition against the 49ers. Final score, 41-10
Coming in at number 2 is the Cowboys vs the Saints. This game started a battle of undefeated teams. Even so, fans saw it as a one-sided game in which the Cowboys would thrive. In the end, this was a shocker to fans all over the country. New Orleans Saints superstar running back Alvin Kamara could not stop impressing. He rushed for 115 yards and 3 touchdowns not even including his 2 catches for 65 yards and a touchdown. Saints quarterback Derek Carr threw for 243 yards and 2 touchdowns which helped lift the team to a huge upset win over the Cowboys, blowing them out 44-19. Although quarterback Dak Prescott for the Cowboys threw for 293 yards and a touchdown, his 2 interceptions were the nail in the coffin for the Cowboys. The final score was 44-19.
As our number 1 game of the week, we have a rematch from back-to-back AFC Championship games. The Bengals returned to Kansas City to play the Chiefs in an all-out brawl and an insane matchup of highly skilled Quarterbacks. Joe Burrow the Quarterback for the Bengals passed for 258 yards and 2 touchdowns. At the same time, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes passed for 151 yards 2 touchdowns, and threw 2 interceptions. One was an insane one-handed interception by Bengals cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt. Even so, this game remained very close until the final seconds. The Chiefs were down by 2 on the scoreboard with less than a minute remaining on fourth down and took a shot downfield just for it to be knocked away and the game to end, or so we thought. Seconds after the ball hit the ground the yellow flag came flying into the air and in the end it placed the Chiefs downfield with a chance at a game-winning field goal. With time expiring, Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker nailed a 51-yard field goal to end the game with the Chiefs on top 26-25.
