Whether or not you have noticed it, pop culture has always been a defining factor of what is in and out of style when it comes to fashion. If it be by music, television, movies, brands, or TikTok trends, pop culture is one of the greatest elements that dictate the current styles, patterns and designs of clothing. From the mall to the runway, from A-list celebrities to high school students, there is no question about the significance of pop culture in fashion.
Many take inspiration from their favorite characters in popular movies and television. Characters like Rachel Green from Friends and Lorelai Gilmore from Gilmore Girls deliver casual yet fashionable looks that are easy enough to recreate or take inspiration from which many look for when developing their personal style.
The 2023 movie Barbie inspired more people to incorporate the color pink into their wardrobe and the resurgence of ‘90s movies like Clueless helped to bring back elements of the fashion from that decade.
Pop culture has also been used as inspiration for designer brands as well, specifically the brand Moschino. For 10 years, fashion designer Jeremy Scott was Moschino’s creative director and was influenced by consumer culture when designing his collections. Coca-cola, Spongebob, Barbie, and various snacks brands were used to influence some of the notable collections that Scott produced during his time at Moschino. For the 2019 Met Gala with the theme “Camp”, singer Kacey Musgraves arrived in a Moschino gown inspired by the character Elle Woods from the 2001 film Legally Blonde.
Popular culture influences much of the way we dress and helps many to discover their own personal styles.
