Autumn is a time when most students get new shoes. So, I think this season is the best time to experiment with footwear. Boots, loafers, sneakers, Mary Janes, and ballet flats – what can’t you wear?
As I’ve been observing my peers’ recent footwear choices, I have noticed a curious new trend in shoes: Goodbye thigh highs, low footwear is back. I first noticed this trend when I saw the new wave of all low-top Uggs last year. Slip-on shoes are an inevitable, if reprehensible, trend; People are tired of taking the time to tie laces. Thus the Ugg slippers.
So there’s a general shift towards lower footwear, not only for ease but for style. Low-top footwear lengthens the legs. I feel like the “model-off-duty” look (tall, thin, casual), lends itself to these shoes.
So what does this mean for our boots? Unfortunately, this may be a funeral for the tall, fall boots (at least for this season). Ask your mom if she saved any of her ballet flats from the early-aughts. Maybe invest in a pair of ankle boots, which are more timeless.
Personally, I thrifted some deep-red Mary Janes for $20 last year and I’m ready to get my moneys worth.
