“A Minecraft Movie”. A movie that needs no introduction. The perfect film.
“A Minecraft Movie”, directed by Jared Hess, was released on April 4th, 2025. It has 48% rotten tomatoes (which is simply barbaric) and a 5.9/10 rating on IMDb. But if you look at the film’s ratings, you will see that every single bad review has the same complaint.
“A Minecraft Movie” is a movie based on one of the most popular video games of all time; Minecraft. It was released on May 17th, 2009 and began to garner significant attention around 2012. This was due to Youtubers like DanTDM, LDShadowLady, Mumbo Jumbo, and Technoblade, who created “Let’s Play” videos. Beautifully enough, all four of these creators have cameos in the movie including the tribute to the late Technoblade.
Technoblade is shown in the movie not physically but in a scene when Steve (Jack Black) is showing Henry (Sebastien Eugene Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers), Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Jason Mamoa), and Dawn (Danielle Brooks) Midport Village. As the cast explores the village, meets some villagers, and goes sightseeing along the way, they find a pig with a crown. Henry asks, “Is he some kind of a king?” to which Steve replies, “No… That’s a legend.” This is a much more beautiful tribute than the fandom could have ever imagined.
Critics who made bad reviews only really had one collective standpoint. They believe that the movie was too artificial-looking or too childish. But these people need to remember that the game was made for children! This game was made to be simple. Minecraft is a sandbox game involving creativity and adventure. Not much of a deeper plot. Critics who claim that the Minecraft Movie had no depth or emotional value have their standards set too high. So, for critics to claim that “A Minecraft Movie” had no depth or emotional value, they should really lower their standards
The film itself was great, but what truly captivated my admiration was the excitement that “A Minecraft Movie” brought to the theater. All the moviegoers had played the game, had watched the same YouTubers growing up, had seen the same loading screen when creating a new world, had experienced a village raid, had built that dirt house. Everyone had the same experiences growing up. That’s what connected the people in the cinema. Going to the theater on the day the movie was released was euphoric. People who had seen the trailer waited for key parts in the film, shouting out:
“I… am Steve!”
“Chicken Jockey!”
“Flint and Steel!”
“This… is a crafting table.”
“The Nether”
My consensus is: If you are expecting the movie to be bad, it is one of the greatest movies you will ever watch. If you are expecting it to be truly cinematic, you will come out of it very disappointed. And if you didn’t have the childhood that most of the viewers had, then good luck!
