Northport High School saw a stellar performance at this year’s annual Science Olympiad regional competition, held on Saturday, January 26th. NHS’s two teams, appropriately named Team A and Team B, were two of the 50+ teams to compete in the regional competition, including from Brentwood, Commack, Smithtown, Half Hollow Hills, Ward Melville (which also happened to be the school at which the event was hosted), and many more. The event was an all-day affair, starting bright and early around 8 AM, and wrapping up with an awards ceremony around 6 PM. Students were divided up into groups of 2 or 3 with each group participating in several individual activities, with a grand total of more than 20 of these activities being held in total throughout the day. Each activity lasted around 45 minutes to  an hour, and involved a focus on a specific scientific discipline, including cryptography, paleontology, engineering, and many more. Some involved building actual models and making projects, while others simply involved a series of questions. Northport as a whole saw high placement, with Team A coming in 12th place, and Team B coming in 25th. Northport also took home 14 medals total, which are earned by placing within the top 10 places for events. Though Northport wasn’t one of the schools to move on to the state level, it nonetheless took a strong position in the overall competition.
