Why You Should Repaint Your Room Right Now

Why You Should Repaint Your Room Right Now

Lily Eagen, Freelancer

Bored of yourself and your surroundings? Lost the motivation to do anything? Need a change? I have a solution for you: repaint your room!

This therapeutic experience will certainly make you feel better about yourself and make you seem more interesting to others. There are so many different options to repaint your room, which makes the job truly suitable for everyone.

Misconception #1: Cost

The main reason many don’t repaint their room is due to the cost of the paint itself. A common misconception is that paint is very expensive, though that isn’t necessarily true.

On average, a gallon of interior paint costs $30-$55. Repainting your room, depending on the size, takes about 2 to 3 gallons of paint, which would be $90-$200, including the rollers and paint brushes needed to get the job done.

Let’s say you repaint your room once a year for three years — that would still be less than getting an iPhone once every three years, which has now become a societal norm. If that still seems too high a cost, you could always paint an accent wall in your room, which would require just one gallon of paint — only about $50-$75, including brushes.

Significant change can still be made in your life without making it too drastic.

Misconception #2: Time Commitment

Another common misconception is that the time commitment to repaint your room is far too great.

Personally, repainting my room took less than 2 days, so you can easily accomplish this feat on a weekend or during the summer. My dad and I worked tirelessly from 12:30pm to 7:30pm on Saturday, with a two hour break from 4:30 to 6:30 to let the paint dry. We worked again from 11:00am to 4:30pm on Sunday, with another two hour break from 12:00 to 2:00.

In total, the entire endeavor took us eight-and-a-half hours, which, in the grand scheme of things, is not very long.

To be honest, the hardest part of this project was moving all the heavy furniture to access the wall. You don’t even have to take everything out of your room — you can simply just move your furniture to the middle. With this, however, you must be careful not to spill paint on anything important (which will most assuredly happen if you don’t take the necessary precautions).

Mental Benefits

Painting is not only fun, but also beneficial to your mental well-being. Studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between stress relief and art, which can provide a distraction from your everyday life.

Painting, and art in general, also boosts self-esteem and creates a feeling of accomplishment when you’ve finished. Both of these things cause a release of dopamine in your brain, which increases your happiness and concentration. Painting, especially with friends or loved ones, can create lasting memories and increase your creativity.

Make the Change!

Change is not always bad, and repainting your room is a great example of this. Painting is affordable, fast, and beneficial for everyone. There are many misconceptions about painting which distract people from all its important benefits.

Even if you don’t paint your entire room, it is still a fun experience that everyone should enjoy at least once in their life!
