Have you noticed the missing posters for a lost dog—Athena—scattered across Commack and East-Northport?

Athena is an almost 3-year-old terrier mix who went missing after she escaped from her front door on January 22, 2022. Her owners just recently moved from Commack to East-Northport; because of this, Athena was not yet acclimated to the environment around her.

Throughout the search, Athena had been spotted in multiple areas across Suffolk County, and was only found February 24—nearly a month after she went missing.

Because Athena is naturally skittish, actually capturing her was quite a difficult task. She ran from everyone that went near her. Many residents went out searching for her with traps, treats, food bowls, cameras, and simple name-calling—”Athena!” There were many sightings of her all over Commack and East-Northport; despite this, she went days without people seeing her, but people kept their hope.

Athena was finally found a few days before her third birthday, near Sunken Meadow Parkway where she was captured and returned to her owners. By the time Athena was found, she was understandably exhausted and weak, yet she is being nursed back to health as we speak.
