Throughout 2022, there were several horror movies that were released to the public to enjoy. Some of the movies included sci-fi creatures that terrorized horse farms, like the ones in NOPE by Jordan Peele. Others involved years of beloved slashers and plot twists that nobody expected, such as the remake of Scream, which was directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Newer releases include Smile, Halloween Ends, and the second edition of the Terrifier series. Many were excited about the film, which involved the infamous Art the Clown terrorizing Miles County after being brought back by a sinister entity. The movie had a run time of two and a half hours and involved scenes so violent that some people had to leave the theater.

With Halloween behind us and the end of the year approaching, people have put the horror movies back onto the shelves and are looking forward to the winter holidays. But the new year has a handful of films for the horror community to look forward to.

One of the more widely talked about is the rumored release of the Five Nights At Freddy’s movie. This movie would focus on the well-known video game that originally came out in 2014 and quickly gained the attention of horror fans. The first game had a second made quickly after that, and now has several additions including games in VR, books, merchandise, and even a few horror attractions made by fans themselves. Throughout its time the game has had rumors of movies prior to this, but this time fans are certain it is true. The company that has taken over the project is Blumhouse Productions, which is known for making movies like The Black Phone, Get Out, and Us. Blumhouse has also informed the public that Emma Tammi will be the director of the movie.

Another horror movie set to release in 2023 has surprised many, as it takes a beloved childhood character and makes him crave something other than honey. With an initial release of February 15, 2023, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey will make its way to theaters. The movie will take a gruesome turn from the beloved show that many grew up watching. The cast of the movie is set to have Craig David Dowsett as the infamous Winnie the Pooh. Dowsett has participated in sci-fi movies like The Area 51 Incident, a movie that came out just this year. According to trailers and press releases, the movie will fall into the slasher category, as Winnie the Pooh and his sidekick Piglet terrorize a house of people.

Some of the new movies aren’t all terror and jump scares, however. Disney plans on releasing a new movie based on one of their attractions around August of 2023, a live action adaptation of the house that is home to 999 happy haunts. Haunted Mansion will feature stars such as Danny DeVito and Winona Ryder. Jamie Lee Curtis will make an appearance as Madame Leota, the spirit of a psychic medium that has been reduced to nothing but a head inside of her crystal ball. The Hatbox Ghost will be played by Jared Leto. The Hatbox Ghost has been a fan favorite ever since the opening of the ride back in 1969, and was a ghost who was able to transport his head from his neck into his hat box. Due to lighting and technical difficulties, he was removed for the next 50 years of the attraction’s runtime, but in 2015 he was able to return to his home in the original Disneyland ride.

Despite all these movies varying in their specific characters and plot points, they fall under the horror movie category. Thousands of people are looking forward to seeing what these films have to offer, and whether or not they will live up to their long awaited screen time. With Halloween passing, horror junkies hope the wait for these movies will be worth it.
