John W. Engeman Theatre in Northport Village has just closed its run of The Scarlet Pimpernel, a musical about a masked do-gooder and his struggles, which include hiding his identity and fixing his relationship with his new wife.

In the interest of transparency, I did not expect to enjoy the music or storyline of the show. I knew the talent would be astonishing, and while that was true I also found myself loving the music, plot, and the characters. There wasn’t an uninteresting character in the show, and I was filled with anticipation the whole time about what was to happen next.

The score was incredible, and more often than not the music correlated to what was happening on stage. From march-like music accompanying the characters in a battle to quiet strings during a late-night conversation, I loved both the actors singing and the orchestra went along with them

The humor in this show didn’t fall flat. The running jokes, including a well-placed butterfly net every so often, added to the story greatly. Percy Blakeney, the main character, had near-perfect comedic timing. The character was both realistically flawed and likable, I loved his humanity and how it tied into his do-gooding.

Even though The Scarlet Pimpernel’s run at Engeman has come to a close, I highly recommend checking out the music and being on the lookout for more productions of this incredible show. In more recent news, the theater is welcoming the incoming cast of The Sound of Music, featuring some incredible young actors that I cannot wait to see on stage.
