Hello everyone, and welcome back to another school year at NHS! (Or, in the case of our Freshman Class, welcome to NHS!) I hope you all had a good summer and are ready for another year of classes! I’ve decided to kick off this year by sharing some tips about what you should do at school. Please keep in mind that these are my opinions and you may disregard them as you please, but I believe these tips will be very helpful.
You should charge your Chromebook overnight and bring it to school. We live in a time where the teacher can say, “Alright, class, take out your Chromebooks and watch this video.” A charged Chromebook is essential for school. You might get lucky and not have to use your Chromebook during any of your classes, but most likely you’ll need it for at least one period.
You should also bring earbuds. If you’re instructed to watch a video, it’s being courteous to the rest of the class so that you’re not distracting them or bothering them with the sound. Another benefit of bringing earbuds is that you can listen to music while you’re working, as long as the teacher allows it.
You should use the to-do list on Google Classroom. Any assignments or questions show up on the to-do list, and it separates them into 4 sections based on when they’re due: this week, next week, later, and no due date. You can also sort it so that it only shows the assignments from 1 specific Classroom. It has a tab where you can see any assignments that are listed as missing, which can also be sorted by class and due date, and there is a third tab where you can see all your turned-in assignments, which, again, can be sorted by class.
You should check your email whenever the teacher posts an assignment, question, announcement, or material in any of the Google Classrooms. You should also read emails of the transcripts for the morning announcements. Many people (myself included) don’t listen to the announcements, so having them in an email is helpful to make sure you don’t miss anything.
You should do your homework. I feel like this one is pretty straightforward. Another important tip is that you shouldn’t procrastinate on large projects or assignments. If you can get it done earlier, you should do so. It might take longer than you expect, or the teacher might say you have to fix it, so this way you have the extra time. And even if you don’t need the extra time, you’ll have gotten it out of the way and you won’t have to worry about it anymore.
You should try to be courteous in the halls. Don’t stand around talking on the library landing. It’s one of the busiest places in the school during passing time and standing around talking there is just getting in the way. You should stay on the correct side of the hallways and stairs. And you shouldn’t roughhouse in the hallways. Again, be courteous to the other people that are walking.
You should show up to class. If you cut class, not only will you get in trouble, but it will put you behind in learning the material, and you’ll have a lot of catching up to do!
You should put your phone away during class. I can’t say this from personal experience, but a lot of people are so enthralled by their phones that it becomes a distraction during class. I’m sure you’ve all noticed this as well – after all, that is why we’ve had the racks to put phones in since last year, and the teachers are enforcing that this year.
You should be kind to your fellow students. If you see someone who looks like they are lost or confused, offer to help them! Also, don’t spread gossip, as it could lead to someone getting teased or bullied.
You should help the teacher. If the teacher asks for help or volunteers, you should help out if you’re not busy. Not only does it feel great to help people, but you’ll show that you’re a responsible student.
I hope this helps all of you! Have a great start to the new school year, everyone, and I’ll see you next time!
