Parking Lot Problems

Parking Lot Problems

Emma Glick, Editor

There has been a longstanding parking issue at Northport High School that needs further discussion. This stems from the fact that there a limited number of spots for an abundance of drivers. Here are some suggestions to both please drivers and create an orderly and safe driving environment.

1). Divide the parking lot equally between juniors and seniors. This solution is the most fair between the grades, with spots being allocated on a first come first served basis.

2). Allow a certain number of spots for juniors to apply for parking based on need, with the rest reserved for seniors on a first-come, first-serve basis. For example: you have a job after school or you don’t get a bus but live too far to walk. Your application will be reviewed, and then your parking status will be determined.

3). Have a lottery involving all juniors and seniors who have a driver’s license. All who wish to drive to school can put their name into a pool of applicants, and students will be randomly selected. This unbiased way of picking individuals eliminates the grade aspect from the parking debate.

4). Because seniors have lunch leave, all spots could be designated to seniors as a privilege of the grade. This will give juniors something to look forward to, and provide them another perk of their long awaited senior year.
