One issue that is close to the heart of many Northport High School students is hygiene. When someone has an air of oniony must, you can’t help but wonder if they’re even aware of soap. On the other hand, have you had moments where you feel gross? Sports are a popular after-school activity and physical education is required for everyone at Northport High School, so this contributes to the stink factor as well. Even so, it seems like every time I’m in the hallway I’m assaulted by repugnant odors.
So how can Northport High School combat this? One prolific method would be the body spray-away method. I’m sure you’ve seen girls pass around a Bath and Body Works mini or, god forbid, have you been bombarded by Axe body spray? Unfortunately, aerosol sprays are sometimes used as weapons and if you take a wrong step, you could have Champagne Toast in your mouth (I know from experience).
I also think that these scents are no substitute for a good old-fashioned shower. Please shower daily! I’m sorry if this is too forward, but when you’re a teenager, you can get very gross very quickly. As long as you moisturize regularly and take care of your hair, washing yourself down every day is the best defense against body odor.
According to Dr. Derrick Phillips, “Washing once a day is adequate for most children and adults to maintain a socially acceptable level of personal hygiene and cleanliness.” Phillips is a dermatologist at the Cadogan Clinic, so he’s definitely a reputable source when it comes to hygiene in teens.
Dental hygiene is another topic. Along with brushing twice daily (or at least in the morning), my personal favorite method of controlling halitosis is Listerine. Their minty-fresh flavors elevate that feeling of cleanliness, and they even offer alcohol-free versions of their mouthwash for more sensitive mouths.
Last but most certainly not least, another important hygiene tool to mention is deodorant and antiperspirant. Firstly, if you’re concerned about your stench, carry a mini deodorant stick or spray with you. Picking a scent is a personal problem, but if you’re not sure whether to buy men’s or women’s deodorant, men’s is better for hairier people while women’s is better to prevent chafing.
Also, consider picking up an antiperspirant. Antiperspirant includes aluminum which prevents moisture better than deodorant.
Overall, the students of Northport should consider upping their hygiene routine. Buy a nice soap, try a new perfume, and/or get a new haircut to make hygiene fun, and I promise it’ll be less of a chore. Together, we can make Northport a better-smelling place.
