Yet again, California is getting slammed with a huge weather system. But instead of rain, it’s snow! They are expected to get around 8 FEET of snow, and in some places up to 10 feet of snow. This is the second time in the span of three weeks that California has gotten a monster storm. First rain, then snow.
Many people are preparing for the snowstorm of the year. This snowstorm is hitting mostly in the mountain and higher elevation areas, so blizzard warnings have been issued in most of Northern California. It will be the biggest blizzard this year. The center of the worst possible snow conditions is a small city called Truckee. As I am writing this, the snowstorm has just begun.
So far, in Truckee around 10 inches of snow has fallen in the span of around 5 hours. In fact, most of Northern California is getting around 3-5 inches of snow per hour. In two days, Truckee will get around 4 feet of snow, and more to come in the next couple of days.
The governor of California, Gavin Newsom, has made California prepared for this great storm. He has a lot of experience with big storms hitting California. With the huge monster rainstorm that happened only a couple of weeks ago, and one of the first hurricanes hitting parts of California. But California is not used to getting this much precipitation.
California’s rain average is only 23.5 inches of rain per year. Put that into perspective with the state of New York’s average of 40 inches of precipitation. But this year with temperatures rising in the Pacific Ocean, it is getting more rain and snow. Already over 17 inches of precipitation have fallen on average in California this year, and it’s only March!
People living in Northern California have braced for the impact of the winter storm. Schools and businesses are closed. Kids are excited about the snow. But the adults know what’s to come.
If you live in California, stay safe out there!
