Black Phone, a movie that came out in 2021, a mix of horror, mystery, psychological thriller, and gore now has its counterpart. Black Phone 2. The first movie is based on a character named Finney, a 13 year old boy with a younger sister, a dead mom, and a dad who is a drunk. There is a sadistic kidnapper in town, The Grabber, who is a “magic act” and a black van to attract young kids to fall into his trap. Finney was one of these victims. He was held in The Grabber’s basement made of concrete walls with an old mattress on the ground and a Black Phone. This phone rings and eventually when Finney picks it up, he finds that he can communicate with the ghosts of The Grabbers past victims, including a boy the Finney had become friends with previously. Long story short, Finney’s sister is having these very vivid visions in her dreams that allow her to see past images of people and eventually locate Finney. Finney breaks free and kills The Grabber and the movie pretty much ends.
I did not see this movie in theaters but I still to this day believe it to be one of the best movies I have ever seen. The plot is so clearly executed and the cinematography feels realistic. Movie on to the sequel.
In Black Phone 2, Finney and his sister Gwen have finally returned to a normal life. Although unfortunately, Gwen is experiencing vivid sleepwalking episodes that allude to the very first victims of The Grabber. But they are very cryptic. So, Finney and Gwen are able to conjure up just enough information to find the camp that these first three murders occurred, come to find out their deceased mother also attended this camp as a CIT years prior. They venture off with their friend Ernesto (who Gwen has become very fond of), and become “CIT’s” at this camp. At this camp, right in the center, a phone booth with a Black Phone stood. Finney started to hear it ringing once again. I’m not going to spoil it for you but basically “the Grabber” seems very stubborn to the idea of dying and continues to taunt Finney. The siblings as well as Ernesto, and the staff at the camp try their best to defeat a ghost and uncover the missing bodies of the three victims.
This movie was very interesting to see in theaters. The cinematography was very different from the first movie from what I can remember, as there were a lot of “found-footage” and scenes, especially when alluding to the fact that Gwen was in a dream state. This movie was very unrealistic compared to the first, but still it had that same grasping energy that the first did. This was a very gory movie. The acting felt very real at most times, especially in the scene when the dad arrives at the camp. And there was a very specific plot twist that came about involving the mothers death that I personally did not expect, and I enjoyed the way they executed this.
Overall, I would give it a watch, especially if you enjoyed the first movie, or if you are a lover of gore-filled mystery/horror psychological thrillers. Do with this as you must and happy watching!
