The novel Legend is the second of four books in the Dystopian collection known as , The Legend Series. I have written a brief overview of the first novel, ‘Legend’, prior and it was a big hit, so here I am summarizing a brief excerpt of the second book, ‘Prodigy’.
As the first novel came to a close, we were left off out on the run with Day and June. After escaping the grasp of the Republic claws, and escaping to so-called “freedom”. Day and June lay side by side in a small box car on a train headed toward the famous, shining city of Las’ Vegas, Nevada. From the point of view of Day, he had just seen his eldest brother John, filled with bullets on live television as it was streamed to the entire country. Because John and Day were siblings, they looked very alike in facial aspects. So John, against Day’s will, forced Day to escape with June as he took the bullets. All to save Day. John was a hero. But afterwards, Day was in utter desperation and anger to the fact that all of his family was wiped out. He tried to grasp thoughts and feelings of anything at all but… he couldn’t all there was inside this 15 year old boy was emptiness. He was in total shell shock. Daniel Altan Wing blamed himself, as well as the Republic for the damage that was caused.
As for June, there is no telling what is going through her head. A solely loyal republican soldier who is that of a prodigy and part of a wealthy class, just abandons it all for this boy? Day of all people. A poor sector low life who embodies nobody but himself. But she still chose him, because she loved him. And because she saw him to be different that what they say of him, that he is misunderstood. And wow is she correct. Day was a prodigy, and he has the power to save everyone. So, although June had all that going for her, she still has the issue of not trusting the Republic. They ordered for her brother and parents deaths. So as she and Day sit in this box car alone yet together. They sympathize for one another. They don’t give up. Not once.
You will see Day and June take alternate perspectives within the story ahead. And within this duel narrated novel, you will embrace the true feeling of trust and what it means to be on a team. These two teens will face the decision of joining the underdogs or the game changers of the country if you will, known as the Patriots and make a pact with the head leader, “Razor” in order to assassinate the new Elector, “Anden”. The ideals of loyalty and skepticism, even anticipation are stressed in extreme moments throughout this novel as the two of them have to face class division, tangible physical pain, and most importantly. The intangibility of emotional weight upon the characters, and even the readers. But no matter the obstacle ahead, Day and June do not rest there cases. They fight until the end for the people they love, and what they know is right.
