All hope is lost. The beginning of the end has just arisen. There is nothing worse than this spontaneous life, running up and down the streets of where I once grew up. The idea that I am alone… or am I. I just need a second to process what is happening, understand the reality of my life and those around me. The people I love.. or the ones I had loved… I need to be shown, hope. Paraphrased from the Novel “Legend” by Marie Lu. A piece of literature that will never be forgotten, in fact. It will be built from. A base of future dystopian writing, a key to the world of reading.
What you read just a few seconds ago up above was paraphrased from the thoughts of Daniel Altan Wing. In simpler terms, “Day” as we call him. A rather infamous boy at the age of 15 or so and contains a criminal record. He has dirty blond hair, average height, and a splash of Mongolian blood in him. He lives in the poor sectors of the Republic, specifically the “Lake Sector” in which life is hard. The sectors are patrolled and infested with Republican guards and cameras of all sorts so that the all mighty Elector Primo can control and use direct rule upon the poor class. Day is ultimately the main protagonist for a massive chunk of the book until a little past ¾ through or so. Day is seen as less than he really is, and he will have a break out, and it’s crazy. He lives with his mother and two brothers… or so he had lived with them. He is seen as a mastermind criminal who can deceive anyone in the blink of an eye. That is until he meets June.
June Iparis, A 15 year old female who is a high ranked “prodigy girl” in the Republic’s standings. She lives in the “Ruby Sector” of the republic. A much higher class than the Lake Sector, and she has access to the top notch training, academics, and universities. She attended “Drake University” where she would learn to become an elite commanding officer in training (CIT) alongside her brother. Her brother, Metias Iparis, is a leading commander of a section of the Republic’s Military. A very famous, well known, kind, smart, and charming guy. He also was a genius who could hack into any system without getting detected… And from there, June and Day create their life paths throughout the novel and blow the readers minds in the end. It is unbelievable.
Essentially, the Novel Legend is a piece of dystopian literature with a collective of 3 books in the series. “Legend”, “Prodigy”, “Champion”, and “Rebel”. But I am only going to review Legend today. The concept is 2 narrations. One by Day, and one by June. It is to show you two perspectives, and two sides of the story. It is a very unbiased series and that is why I love it so much along with millions of others. It is based in the West Coast of the United States Of America. Over there is established the Republic of America. And on the east there are the Colonies of America. It is ultimately a slow by steady civil war that picks up later on. It is based in the year 2131 more than 100 years into the future, and has exceeded my expectations and it made dystopian literature my favorite to read. As the book continues accidents occur, mysteries are unraveled, crimes are committed, and emotions are created. All of which combine to create a perfect mood and thought process for the rest of the novel.
Marie Lu did an incredible job with character and plot development as I was basically connected to Day in many aspects as well as various other characters. I had so many “Oh my god” moments I lost count and I asked my friends the same and they agreed. One of them, Jack Healy, a junior who read it last year said, “Yes oh my god that was such a good book. I did not think I would actually like it as much as I did but it was incredible.” I personally could not stop reading it, I think I finished it in 4 days. The story line continues as Day goes through some horrific things and eventually meets June. It truly is a masterpiece how they were tied together and what makes them but it is incredibly well written.
So yes, the book will take you on a roller coaster of emotions but it will also feed into your desire to read! In all the book is incredible and I hope this was intriguing to say the least!!
