The Agenda Push Failed Badly
Beginning the year, Northport High School constantly pushed for the distribution of agenda books. Unfortunately, the plan for all students to have this agenda book failed. Students didn’t really care about having agenda books and they felt that the school was forcing it upon them. In previous years, they never forced us to have an agenda, so it’s weird why they’re doing it now when they’ve never done it before. On September 22nd, some students, including myself, brought an agenda to school thinking that the teachers would be telling us to write things in it. But throughout that entire week, teachers never said anything about agendas at all. Some students even requested to have school-issued agendas and the majority of the students didn’t even receive them. It’s like agendas were the only thing teachers and staff members would talk about for the first few weeks of school and when the time came for students to use them, the school completely forgot about the initiative and never brought it up ever again.
Why Students “Needed” an Agenda Book
Teachers and staff members of NHS were pushing the so-called “requirement” for students to have agenda planners because they thought it would keep students organized with their assignments. They thought it would help students to remember to do their homework or projects when they got home so that they didn’t forget to do their work. Most students’ work is online now, so they would only need to take their Chromebook out of their backpack. They wouldn’t need to glance at their binder or agenda (if the plan was fully established) because the work is online. Plus, widely-used school apps like Google Classroom show what assignments have to be done, so students can just look online to see what work has to be completed.
My Personal Experience
When the announcements started being made, I went to Staples to look for an agenda but they didn’t have any 2025-2026 ones which I needed since I thought we would use the agenda through the entire year like the announcements kept saying over and over again. Since I couldn’t find the right type of agenda at my local Staples, I looked on Amazon and found the right one. I ordered it for around only $20 and it arrived the next day. I brought it with me to school the following day thinking that the teachers would be forcing us to write all of our work in the agenda or copy the assignments into the agenda from the Google Classroom stream. But when I got to school, none of my teachers said anything about writing assignments in agendas the entire day. I waited for the rest of the week for them to say something about agendas, or at least hear announcements about it on the intercom system, but there was nothing at all. I still have the agenda to this day with nothing written in it. It will be interesting to see if NHS will pursue a mandatory agenda book in upcoming school years.
