In November 2025, the Northport High School librarian, Mrs. Cavaliere, went to a library conference meeting which is where she got inspired to start something in the school library that would let students relax and unwind during their lunch period. The goal of this was to give students a quiet environment where they could study and do their homework. This happened two days each week and these two days became known as Mindful Monday and Wellness Wednesday. This seemed like a good idea at first and in the beginning it was actually benefitting students, but it quickly stopped working and students weren’t taking advantage of it anymore. But why did this happen?
How it Started Off
Mindful Monday and Wellness Wednesday originally started off smoothly and there weren’t any issues. Students were behaving, doing their work, and following the rules. Nobody was being loud, screaming, or playing games on their Chromebooks. Everybody was studying, working, and listening to the relaxing music that was playing in the background that Mrs. Cavaliere had set up. It was like this throughout the first few weeks and I personally thought that it was going to last throughout the entire school year. But eventually, things started to get out of control during these mindful days.
The Downfall
After the first few weeks, people kept showing up to Mindful Mondays and Wellness Wednesdays during their lunch period, but a lot of people stopped following the rules. Students kept talking loudly when they were supposed to be quiet. They were given reminders to lower their voices but they still kept being loud and distracting to the students (including myself), who were trying to get their work done in what was supposed to be a quiet environment. After all, Mindful Mondays and Wellness Wednesdays are both held in the school library, and you’re expected to be quiet when you’re in a library. Another problem is that the library gets so crowded during lunch periods, which makes it even more difficult to focus when people are being noisy and distracting, and it makes it even more difficult for teachers and staff to remind students to be quieter. In some cases, students were asked to leave the library because they were being too loud.
The Current State of Mindful Days
Currently, Mindful Mondays and Wellness Wednesdays are still happening during lunch periods in the library, but they have started to fade out and become obsolete. People stopped caring about it and whenever students go into the library during their lunch periods on Monday and Wednesday, they treat it like any other day in the library where you don’t have to be quiet and can talk loudly with your friends. Because of this, teachers and staff don’t really push out the idea of Mindful Mondays and Wellness Wednesdays anymore since the majority of students didn’t use this time effectively to unwind and have a free period to themselves like Mrs. Cavaliere was hoping.
My Opinion
I personally like Mindful Mondays and Wellness Wednesdays. It gives me time to do any assignments that I need to work on or if I have to study for a test. I also enjoyed the quiet music in the background, it helped me stay focused while also having something in the background to listen to while I concentrate on my work or studying. I’m disappointed about how mindful days declined but I also had a feeling that this might happen in the future, just not so soon.
