On February 6th, a walkout protest was organized to happen in the third period, at 9:50 in the morning. Many teachers and students have either heard, or went to the protest. Many must be wondering, what was it about?
Donald Trump’s Immigration Enforcement
Ever since Donald Trump won the Presidential election, and became the official President of the United States in 2025, he has been setting strict and firm immigration laws, and has increased homeland security measures. Donald Trump, along with his administration, believe that they are protecting the streets and cities by deploying more than 12,000 ICE agents, building more detention centers, making a self deportation program, increasing pay benefits for ICE agents, and stricter border policies. According to the Department of Homeland Security and the Trump administration, over 600,000 immigrants were brought in detention centers, and deported from the US in late 2025 and early 2026. Along with the numbers, over 1.9 million of immigrants self deported. Charts show that Donald Trump and his administration have more than 973 daily ICE arrests, more than Obama, and Biden’s during their years in office.
The History of ICE Protests
Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE), have been around for about twenty-two years, being officially established in March 2003. ICE was created in response to 9/11, and because of the civil and criminal authorities that were given to them, they have become a powerful law enforcement agency. But their legal authority and power caused most Americans to become concerned, believing that ICE is abusing their power and harming immigrants. Concerned Americans have been protesting against ICE ever since Obama’s administration, with only one goal, to stop mass deportations, and protect immigrants and their communities from facing any violation of their human rights. The number of protesters against ICE has increased significantly after Donald Trump deployed more ICE officers in cities, with protesters now recording ICE raids, throwing glitter bombs at ICE officers, and trying to physically stop ICE from abducting any immigrant. Along with the increase protesting against ICE, it is clear that America has been divided into two separate opinions when it comes to the topic of ICE. With Conservatives holding a positive view of ICE, and strongly supporting the idea of deploying more ICE agents around America.
Regardless, people have a right to their own opinion, and that was surely expressed on February 6th during the peaceful walkout. Everyone is entitled to believe in what they seem morally correct.
